In 2003 PurplePassport Ltd developed a web-based, all sector skills passport which provided a more efficient way for people to record their skills and qualifications and that was more powerful and more versatile than the traditional CV. 

To achieve this we needed to create a tool that was more useful and more valuable to the individual and more secure and more comprehensive to the employer - but at the same time didn't seek to replace the CV.

The result is a scheme that can be used by anyone and enables people to maintain their personal skills and qualifications profile on-line and have their details confirmed as genuine by a network of registered verifiers and that transforms into a smart and sophisticated CV.

A skills passport holder can easily let their existing or prospective employer view their skills record, without revealing personal information (address, DOB etc) and this can be done instantly and remotely as it doesn’t require the original certificates; the verifiers details are recorded and they could be contacted, should a double check be needed.

Employers can issue passport to their employees and training providers can issue them to students. This allows them to search the skills of the passport holders they have set up, which helps them identify skills shortages, aids training and helps comply with legislation. It can also be very useful for employers who have contract staff entering their premises as they can easily check the validity and qualifications of the contractor.

 The PurplePassport concept has now developed into a network of passport schemes which cover many different areas of employment (e.g. catering, retail, facilities  etc) and more than 8 million people. Because the various schemes are all part of the same PurplePassport network, if people change jobs, they  can easily swap from one industry sector to another without having to renew their skills record.
